Our story begins in the sleepy little river city of Vicksburg, Mississippi. FS5's own Nathan Cheslek was gigging around, developing his blues-rock style (and his love for effects pedals) with various musicians in the area.
Around that same time, in the somewhat larger city of Jackson, MS, another future FS5 member, namely Wes Oden, was playing with some local grunge bands, and working his guitar style up. Eventually he turned to bass because of a shortage, figuring it would be easier to shop and choose a band more his style. Around 1997, he took a break from playing live music to produce electronic dance music and eventually went on to DJ on the club/rave circuit in Mississippi.
Nathan and another musician from Vicksburg, we'll call him MD, eventually moved to Jackson, and in late 1999, hooked up with an auxillary percussionist by the name of Jeremy Mitchell, and formed a band known as Souliloquy.
About this time, a songwriter/guitarist named Lee McGlaun was rocking Hattiesburg, MS with a band called Trifecta.
In early 2000, Jeremy and Wes met through a mutual friend, and began playing open mike night at a local pub for shits and giggles, marking the end of a 3 year hiatus from live music by Wes. Since Souliloquy was in need of a bass player, Wes thought he might be able to fill the spot, and thus the full lineup for Souliloquy was born. Nathan, Jeremy, Wes and MD set out to take over the world with their jam-rock style. Unfortunately, MD had written 95% of the material for Souliloquy, and upon leaving the band in mid-2001 (over a hotel room no less...), left them back at square one.
Determined to continue on, Wes began writing material for the band with intentions of staying a power trio. A few good songs came of his first efforts, with a few that would eventually get tossed.
At some point, Lee had relocated to the 'burbs of Jackson, and was playing at the same open mike nights that Jeremy and Wes were playing at. After speaking with various members of the band on different occasions, Lee was invited to come play with what remained of Souliloquy around the beginning of 2002.
The band name, Funk Shack Five, is the product of these four guys being locked in Nathan's house for 3 hours.
The rest, as they say, is history....
